While Koramangala and Indiranagar remain the most convenient and lucrative localities for start-ups in Bangalore, localities such as HSR Layout, RT Nagar and Jayanagar are witnessing an increased traction from investors and entrepreneurs, thanks to affordability and sufficient availability of new-age office spaces.
With a lot of new investors and young entrepreneurs entering the market with innovative ideas, Bangalore’s start up space is expanding. Of late, entrepreneurs, especially those working on their own ventures are now looking at destinations away from the central part of the city such as Outer Ring Road (ORR) and HSR where they can get the same facilities and infrastructure at a competitive price.
In addition to this, newly constructed office spaces that are mushrooming in the outskirts gives entrepreneurs the liberty to design and customise office space as per their need and creativity. 99acres lists the top start-up hubs in India’s Silicon Valley.
Koramangala: From being a ‘mosquito-infested’ swamp to a ‘test lab’ of startups across the country, Koramangala has significantly developed into a big and bustling neighbourhood. The region started garnering traction around 20 years ago when the first lot of tech startups along with some smaller software companies came up with their offices here, primarily fascinated by low rentals and superior quality of life as compared to a central business district (CBD). It was e-commerce giant Flipkart's choice to operate from an apartment in the mid-2000s that made Koramangala a popular start-up hotspot.
The region has a wide range of shared-seat offices, smart co-working and networking spaces along with venture capitalists and investor headquarters. “A strong community of freshers (engineers) and migrant population, looking for a job or planning their own start-up prefer Koramanagala due to the presence of a large number of PG’s operating here,” avers Karim Khan, Managing Partner, Network Ventures. Good civic infrastructure and connectivity coupled with presence of social utilities, primarily coffee shops, where most of the client meetings take place are some other reasons that work in favour of this region. HackerEarth, Grabhouse and Instamojo are some of the start-ups operating from Koramangala.
Indiranagar: Indiranagar is another well-established start-up hub in Bangalore that sees an influx of migrants from across the country. A neighbourhood of Koramangala, it is a premium locality situated in the eastern part of Bangalore and boasts of established social infrastructure including hotels and coffee shops along with strong connectivity via metro. “The start-up culture is largely dependent on co-working spaces owing to affordable prices and since a lot of these are coming up in Indiranagar, the region garners traction from entrepreneurs and individuals,” adds Khan. India’s first start-up hostel has opened its doors in Indiranagar last year only. TechSoftZ is a prominent star-up based out of Indiranagar.
HSR Layout: Of late, the Hosur-Sarjapur Road (HSR) Layout is gradually developing on the lines of Koramangala and becoming a prominent start-up hub in the city. Being located a little far away from the bustling central part of Bangalore, the area includes ORR and is situated between software parks of Electronic city and Sarjapur road. In addition to the affordable co-working and shared office spaces available here, the region is garnering traction due to new co-working spaces coming up here which can be modified as per the individual’s needs and requirement, unlike Koramangala and Indiranagar where, fully built houses are taken on rent, leaving no scope for customisation. The announcement of first Startup Incubation hub in HSR Layout by the Karnataka government will give a further boost and offer a supportive environment and infrastructure for fostering such companies in the city. Quester, Royale Kitchen and Epair India are some eminent start-ups based in the region, among others.
RT Nagar: Over the years, RT Nagar has witnessed a significant transformation, owing to establishment of several IT hubs in the city and the development of an airport in Devanahalli. Situated in northern Bangalore, the area is situated close to premium localities such as Sadashivnagar and Dollar’s Colony or Sanjay Nagar. Primarily known for its thriving commercial hubs, the start-up culture in the region has picked up pace mainly due to a good of share of co-working and shared offices. Sound road connectivity, proximity to employment hubs such as Manyata Tech Park, Wipro Corporate office and Bagmane Tech Park and ample availability of good restaurants and eateries are some other growth propellers for the budding start-up culture in the region. The area is home to start-ups such as Tertium Technology Pvt. Ltd and MS Legal Associates.
Jayanagar, JP Nagar and ORR are some other areas that are touted as the next big start-up hubs in Bangalore.
