The Government had launched the Smart Cities Mission in June 2015. To implement the mission, the Central Government would allocate Rs 500 crore to each of the selected 100 cities. Each selected city would receive a grant of Rs 100 crore per year for five years. The same amount would be released by the State government as well. The mission was launched to tackle issues faced in urban areas such as transportation, energy supply, urban infrastructure services and overall quality of life.
