In order to ease the situation of traffic congestion across the city, Pune Traffic Department along with Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has decided to redevelop 13 major junctions of the city. Reportedly, these junctions face significant traffic issues and consequently, the chances of road accidents in these regions are high. Redevelopment will not only ease the traffic but will also help to reduce the accident chances by almost 50 percent. This is necessary keeping in the mind the ever-increasing vehicular traffic in the city, says Pankaj Deshmukh, Chief, Pune Traffic Department.
Reportedly, various junctions in the city do not have proper service roads, turning corners, blind spots, and refuge islands. Moreover, the designs are misleading, which is the major cause for the escalating traffic woes and accidents in the city.
According to the PMC officials, the corporation is working in coordination with the traffic department to chalk a detailed plan pertinent to the redevelopment process. In the wake of increasing concerns, improvisations such as correct placement of zebra crossings, addition of refuge islands, and bigger sign boards are considered to be the need of the hour.
