In one of its ambitious development scheme, the Maharashtra government has proposed cluster development of Thane, which will enable economic growth of residential areas.

In a major revelation, only a small percentage of the funds sanctioned under three different verticals of Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Urban (PMAY-U) have been utilised in the last six years. While 25 percent of the funds have been spent under In-Situ Slum Redevelopment (ISSR), around 26 percent and 27 percent funds have been utilised for Affordable Housing in Partnership (AHIP) and Beneficiary-led Construction (BLC) verticals, respectively.

As a result of poor utilisation of funds, only 30 percent of the sanctioned houses have been constructed under PMAY-Urban (PMAY-U) during the reported timeframe. Out of 23 lakh houses sanctioned under the AHP vertical, nearly 5.16 lakh houses have been delivered so far. Similarly, only 19.53 lakh houses have been constructed under the BLC segment against the sanctioned 68.69 lakh houses. As per an official data, nearly 18,000 houses have been completed under ISSR across a few States. To apprise, only eight States have taken up projects under the ISSR vertical till date.

Under the slum redevelopment segment, around 4.46 lakh houses have been completed till mid-March 2021. Nearly 14 lakh houses have been handed over to beneficiaries under the government’s Credit-Linked Subsidy Scheme (CLSS) of PMAY.
