In a move to ease traffic woes for commuters travelling to and fro between Delhi and Noida, a new highway has been proposed by the Noida Authority. This roadway will stretch from Okhla Barrage to the Yamuna Expressway, passing through the Hindon-Yamuna Doab. The project could be an eight-lane ground-level expressway or a six-lane elevated expressway.
For this, on September 18, 2024, the Noida Authority submitted a proposal to the Uttar Pradesh government’s Public Works Department (PWD). It has requested that the route be declared as a national highway.
Currently, people travelling from Delhi to Noida usually experience heavy traffic, particularly during peak hours. This leads to increased carbon emissions, elevating the air pollution problem in the region. The new highway could become a crucial step towards better environmental conservation.
Once completed, the Okhla Barrage Yamuna Expressway is expected to reduce congestion on the heavily used Noida-Greater Noida Expressway. It will also promote social and economic growth in the region. With smoother connectivity between Delhi, Noida, and Greater Noida, the highway will support future traffic demands as the population and infrastructure continue to expand.
The final approval of the project is awaited and expected to bring much-needed relief to daily commuters. Residents of Delhi and the Noida-Greater Noida areas can look forward to faster commutes and reduced environmental impact once the highway is completed.
