The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has floated new guidelines for recovering the fire services fee from building owners, due since 2014.
In a recent development, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has drafted a new Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for the imposition of fire services fees for buildings that will come up after June 2021.
In the month of May 2021, the civic body had authorised the recovery of the fire services fee. It is calculated at Rs 10 per sq m for all buildings. The annual charges are levied at 1 percent of the total fire service fee amount. The fire services fee and annual fee are recovered under the Maharashtra Fire Prevention and Life Safety Measures Act, 2006.
According to a senior civic official of the BMC, “These two fees were levied to raise an internal fund for the upgradation of fire and safety services. While 50 percent of the fee collected is given to the State government, remaining 50 percent is used by the BMC to develop better fire and safety infrastructure, including setting up of new fire stations. However, recovery of the concerned fire charges are due since 2014.”
The BMC has exempted the religious places and some other categories such as old age homes from paying the due charges.
