The groundwork for the last stretch of the New Garia-Airport Metro corridor in Kolkata has finally started after a long wait. The stretch from New Town VI to the terminal airport is slated for completion in January 2024.
The Afcons Infrastructure, an implementing agency, has eventually started work on the last phase of the New Garia-Airport Metro corridor, the most problematic section on Line 6 of the Kolkata Metro. The 3.5 km-long stretch from City Centre 2 to Biman Bandar, where the Naopara-Airport Metro would also emerge, was earlier planned as underground. However, the land acquisition issues cropped up for the ramp and the metro station near Haldiram’s outlet at Teghoria. Thus, the Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) had to amend the section into an elevated viaduct.
The New Garia-Airport is planned to be around 32 km-long and will encompass 24 stations, including Biman Bandar, VIP Road, Chinar Park, City Centre 2, Mangal Deep, Eco Park, Swapno Bhor, Technopolis, Salt Lake Sector V, Kavi Sukanta, Satyajit Ray and Kavi Subhash, among others. It will be one of the most crucial metro stretches as it will connect the southern and eastern parts of the city with Kolkata Airport.
