In a bid to encourage the property tax defaulters to pay their dues, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation has extended the deadline for a 100 percent interest waiver scheme until March 31, 2021. The civic body is more likely to extend the scheme, too.

In an enabling decision, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has extended the deadline for a 100 percent interest waiver on property tax payment till March 31, 2021. The civic body hopes to collect Rs 200 crore during this period.

In addition to this, the civic body plans to announce a 60 percent waiver on the interest accrued on the pending property tax. The interest waiver scheme was introduced last year. The initial deadline to avail of the discount was December 31, 2020. However, witnessing a rush to avail of the 100 percent waiver and enabling the tax defaulters to take benefit of the scheme, the civic body has decided to extend the deadline till March 31, 2021.

According to senior officials of KMC, of over one lakh property tax defaulters who had applied for the waiver, over 80 percent have paid the dues, resulting in a collection of Rs 450 crore. The civic body hopes that the extension of the deadline will encourage the remaining defaulters to pay their dues. If the defaulters do not comply, the civic body might also conduct raids to recover the due amount.
