In a bid to provide some respite to the severely hit middle-class homeowners, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) announced a property tax amnesty scheme till January 31, 2021. However, the deadline has lately been extended by a month to help more property owners pay their outstanding taxes.
According to Firhad Hakim, Chairman, KMC, “The civic body could not collect adequate funds from the 100 percent interest waiver scheme as not many homeowners leveraged the opportunity due to COVID-19. However, given the market condition is gradually improving now, more people may come forward to rake in some revenue. Therefore, the extension has been offered.”
The municipal corporation has also compiled a list of popular tax defaulters. In case they fail to pay the taxes within the extended deadline, stringent action will be taken against them.
