The Union Defence Ministry’s decision to acquire a land of five acres near Mopa airport in Goa has not gone too well with a local Non-Government Organisation (NGO) that has dubbed the move as land-grabbing.
The NGO opposed the decision of the government by saying that it will restrict common people’s access to such sites and will also affect the lives of nearby residents.
Commenting on the development, Tara Kerkar, a local activist, stated that the move will restrict citizens’ access to the site. She questioned the trend of Goan land being handed over to the Defence Ministry.
The local activist was also concerned about the harmful effects of the move on local people residing nearby the site. She said that most homes are at risk of catching fire while dispatching explosives.
On the other hand, Andrea Pereira, member of a local NGO, commented that the government should consider giving one large land to THE Defence ministry instead of bits and pieces. The state government is causing a major inconvenience for local residents, said Pereira.
