Smart city projects worth Rs 53,000 crore underway: HUA ministry

According to a senior Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry official, smart city projects worth Rs 53,000 crore have either been finished, under execution or are in the tendering stage. Of the 100 smart cities announced till date, Special Purpose Vehicles (SPVs) for 94 have been setup and 71 project management consultants have been appointed.

As per HUA Secretary DS Mishra, of the total 5,116 projects, 332 projects worth Rs 5,991 crore have been finished, 697 projects worth Rs 27,703 crore are under execution while 432 projects worth Rs 19,162 crore are under tendering. As of date, a total of ten Smart Command and Control Centres worth Rs 1,523 crore have been finished, 15 centres are under implementation and 32 worth Rs 2,827 crore are under tendering.

Besides, four smart road projects, seven smart solar projects and six smart water projects have also been finished. Around 14 projects under the Public-Private-Partnership model costing Rs 770 crore have also been finished.

The Union government’s flagship mission – the Smart Cities Mission was launched on June 25, 2015. Under the mission, the Centre grants a financial aid of Rs 500 crore to each of the selected cities for executing various projects proposed by it.

In addition to this, the Housing and Urban Affairs (HUA) Ministry has also received in-principle nod from the Finance Ministry for Delhi-Meerut stretch of the Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS), phase IV of the Delhi Metro and metro rail projects in five cities of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh.
