Cost of painting a house

Painting your home is one the best ways to enhance and revamp the look of your abode. It is the simplest method to refurbish the house and add dramatic effects to it. However, the process of painting is not as easy as it seems. Factors like the type of the paint, colour and the cost involved makes house painting a challenging task and needs to be well thought out before implementing.

Many people get overwhelmed at the idea of painting a house. They spend hours on colour selection depending upon the mood they want to create. However, it is not all that goes in the process. Labour fee, wall cleaning, coats of paint added to the wall and size of the house are the key elements to be considered before planning house painting and fixing the budget.

In addition, the type of the paint selected is also a key budget influencer. According to Ajay Agarwal, Chairman, Geopreneur Group, “Paints are classified into two broad categories, i.e., oil-based paints and water-based paints. Water-based Paint (WBP) is a high quality plastic paint emulsion that offers immaculate finishing. It is lead free paint and an eco-friendly option for painting the home interiors. In NCR, the average cost of WBP painting is Rs 22-23 per sq ft. Oil-Based Paint (OBP) is a superior quality than plastic paint and adds sheen to the wall. Average cost of OBP is Rs 18 to Rs 25 per sq ft.”

Exterior painting of the house

Before you start with the exterior painting of the house, undertake a few preparations. Clean the dirt and mold from the walls, even out the rough surfaces and select the paint. Remember, exterior of the house is exposed to extreme weather conditions. In order to ensure longevity and preserve the curb appeal of the house, high quality paints should be preferred. Most people prefer water-proof paints or latex paints considering the long monsoon season in India.

In addition, selecting the right season for exterior painting of the house is also important. According to Sumit Aggrawal, Designer, Homzkraft, “One should choose a dry or warm season like summers or late spring for exterior painting. It is an ideal time for painting as it ensures best weather conditions for the paint to dry and settle down.”

Experts recommend that a bright or dark color should be selected for exterior painting. Exterior walls have to withstand extremes weather conditions. Thus, light colours might fade in rainy season.

Interior painting of the house

Colors uplift mood. Right hues can be selected depending upon the size of the room, light source, fixed and furnished elements and surface of the wall. Undulation on the interior walls should be checked to avoid rough patches and cracks. Before the actual painting process begins, a layer of primer or putti should be applied to even out the rough surfaces and fill the fissures.

Usually, home owners prefer acrylic paints for interior walls. Among the elite section, texture painting is a propelling trend. Multiple designs are available in texture paint ranging from nature and wildlife to cartoons and animations. Velvet painting is also preferred by many home owners.
