The traffic police department of Bangalore has demanded, from the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), a plan to develop crosswalks across the city at accident-prone zones. Considering this, the civic body has drafted a plan to develop 500 raised crosswalks in the city.

The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has drawn up plans to construct 500 raised crosswalks at the height of 15 cm beside speed bumps on roads. The crosswalks are being implemented across the city at over 300 locations to ensure pedestrian safety at junctions where motorists have a tendency to go over the speed limit and cause accidents.

With elevated crosswalks, better road crossing facilities will be available at high tension roads like Outer Ring Road, Sarjapur Road, Magadi Road and few other essential roads of Bangalore. Bangalore Traffic Police (BTP) had made a presentation seeking a detailed outline of the construction plan from the BBMP infrastructure wing.

The traffic police demanded the implementation of crosswalks at 206 locations across the city, while the BBMP had already invited tenders for over 500 crosswalks. The civic body plans to issue work orders to the contractors so that work is taken up under State government grants.

To eliminate the possibility of a mishap, raised medians, reflective medians and dividers and hazard boards will be set up at blind spots. The exact points in the city where these preventive structures will be set up will only be revealed with the completion of the road safety audit.
