To improve connectivity in and around Karnataka, the Ministry has launched several highway projects under the Bharatmala Pariyojana. shares a list of all the proposed highway projects under Bharatmala.

With an aim to provide hassle-free vehicular movement across the country, the Central Government had launched an ambitious highway development project, Bharatmala Pariyojana. Under the project, around 50 economic corridors will be constructed to connect distant regions to the developed cities across the country. In Karnataka, several highway projects have already been announced, while some of them are in the development phase. The Government has announced an investment of Rs 1,44,922 crore for development of national highways in the State in the next two years.

Status of Bharatmala Projects in Karnataka

  • Over 40 road corridors costing Rs 85,000 crore in the State have been approved under the ambitious highway project.
  • About 13 road projects covering a length of 1,435 km amounting Rs 20,000 crore are underway.
  • Overall 12 projects running 645 km are at the bidding stage.
  • The detailed project report (DPR) has been prepared for 16 road projects, stretching 1,646 km.


Bharatmala Projects in Bangalore

Bangalore Ring Road Project

The development of over 500 km of highway projects in Karnataka, including Satellite Town Ring Road (STRR) is underway. The ring road will be known as Bangalore Ring Road. The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has initiated the work of a particular section of the ring road in Bangalore to Hosur in Tamil Nadu connecting NH-4 and NH-7. The proposed road corridor will connect Hosur, Anekal, Kanakapura, Ramanagara, Magadi, and Dabaspet. Estimated to be developed at Rs 10,000 crore, about 140 km of the ring road will be developed in Karnataka, while about 45 km of road will be constructed in Tamil Nadu.

Chennai-Bangalore Expressway

This expressway will pass through three States - Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. The proposed expressway will include highway corridors running 76 km in Karnataka, 91 km in Andhra Pradesh and 94 km in Tamil Nadu. The project will be developed at a tentative cost of Rs 16,000 crore.

Bangalore-Malappuram economic corridor

Six-laning of access control of the Bangalore-Mysore section at a budget of Rs 7,000 crore is in the development stage. The stretch is a part of Bangalore-Malappuram corridor. The Bangalore-Mysore stretch will consist of elevated corridors, nine major bridges, and four ROBs (Road Over Bridges. DPR has already been prepared.

Amravati-Bangalore corridor

The highway connecting Bangalore and Amaravati has two routes, via Ananthapuramu and Tirupati. The corridor connecting Bangalore to Amaravati via Ananthapuramu passing through NH-7 has been completed. The alternative route via Tirupati crossing through NH-4 has been completed, too.

Shiradi Ghat Tunnel

Covering a length of 23.6 km, the tunnel will be built at a cost of Rs 10,000 crore. The Detailed Project Report (DPR) of the project is under process.
